Scope and Content Mill room, Talisker Distillery, Skye, Highland Talisker Distillery, the only single malt distillery on Skye, was established in 1830 by brothers Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill. It was renovated 1880-7, and expanded in 1900. Triple distillation was abandoned in 1928 in favour of double distillation, in common with most other Scottish distilleries. After a fire in 1960 most buildings were replaced, but the distillery's maltings were demolished in 1972. This shows, from left to right, the door of the mash house where malt and water are mixed together, a display of barley, grist and information boards for use on tours, a 'Porteus' malt mill for grinding barley before mashing, and the door to the malt stores. A visit to Talisker is carefully described by Alfred Barnard in his 1887 guide; 'The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom'. He describes the impressive scenery around the works, women cutting peat in nearby fields and the modern equipment he saw on his tour led by the distillery manager, Mr Alexander Green.
