Scope and Content Duty free warehouse from south, Tobermory Distillery, Tobermory, Mull, Argyll & Bute Tobermory Distillery (sometimes known as Ledaig Distillery), was founded in 1798 by John Sinclair, and was fully established by 1823. It was closed between 1930 and 1972 before the site was bought by a property developer, who turned the warehouses into flats. The distillery was re-opened between 1989 and 1993, and fell silent for a time until it was purchased and revived by Burn Stewart. This shows the duty free warehouse, a four-storeyed rubble-built structure with corrugated metal external stair-towers. This was originally used to store casks of whisky whilst they matured (for at least three years). It was used as a cheese store by the Sgriob-ruadh cheese company before being converted to flats c.1995. Many large industrial buildings are converted into fashionable loft-style apartments when they are no longer required for their original purpose. The whisky from Tobermory Distillery is now sent by tanker to be matured at Deanston. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
