Scope and Content Still house from west, Tormore Distillery, Highland Tormore was the first new distillery to be built in Scotland in the 20th century. It was designed by architect Sir Albert Richardson, a past president of the Royal Academy and completed in 1960. In 1972 the number of stills was increased from four to eight, and it continues to produce spirit for the 'Long John' blends. This shows four of the stills in the large still house building. The stills are made of copper, and follow the traditional shape. The floor is covered in metal mesh and a stairway leads down to a lower level to access the boilers which heat the 'wash' within the still until the alcohol rises as vapour. The vapour passes over the 'lyne arm' (copper pipe at the top of each still) and into the condensers. At this stage the spirit is clear, and does not take on its characteristic golden colour and complex flavour until it has been matured in oak casks for at least three years.
