Scope and Content Tun room from west, Tormore Distillery, Highland Tormore was the first new distillery to be built in Scotland in the 20th century. It was designed by architect Sir Albert Richardson, a past president of the Royal Academy and completed in 1960. In 1972 the number of stills was increased from four to eight, and it continues to produce spirit for the 'Long John' blends. This shows the tun room with its stainless steel washbacks with their domed tops. The room is clean and modern, in contrast to the traditional image of a distillery with its wooden washbacks and old stone buildings. A member of staff is checking the fermenting yeast and malt sugars within one of the vessels. During fermentation, the 'wash' rises up as froth, which is contained below the domed lid of the washback. After fermentation the wash mixture has the alcohol content of strong beer, and is ready for distillation and maturation into malt whisky. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
