Scope and Content Parish Church, Kilconquhar, Fife Kilconquhar Parish Church stands within its churchyard overlooking the picturesque village of Kilconquhar on the shores of Kilconquhar Loch. The church, built in 1819-21, was photographed by Erskine Beveridge c.1885. The church stands on a grassy knoll surrounded by rich agricultural land. Its square, 24m-high Gothic-style tower is a local landmark, with a distinctive top stage with octagonal turrets forming the cornerposts of the fretted parapet. In the late 19th-century, Fife had some of the richest agricultural land in Scotland, with wheat being one of the main crops. The traditional method of harvesting was by horse-drawn reaping machines driven by one man. The stalks of wheat thrown off the cutting blades were bound by women with bands of straw to form bundles (sheaves), which were then gathered together and arranged into groups (stooks), and stood on end in the field to dry.
