Scope and Content Tracks leading to works looking west, Douglas Fireclay Works, Dalry, North Ayrshire Douglas Fireclay Works was opened in 1914. In the 1960s it was taken over by Morgans and bought by A P Green Refractories Ltd, an American company, in 1970. Until shut down in 1982, Douglas Works specialised in refractory bricks with the heat-resistant qualities necessary for heat-intensive industries. This shows the tracks of the 52cm-gauge cable-operated railway which transported fireclay from Monkcastle Mine to the works, some 900m to the west, using an electric haulage engine. On the right is the office and weighbridge and on the left sections 1 and 2 of the clay mine. Douglas Works used local fireclay mined from Langside at Galston, Smithstone at Kilwinning and Monkcastle, which was the last of these local mines to supply fireclay to the works. After Monkcastle stopped supplying the works in 1981, raw materials for production had to be brought in until the works closed in 1982. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
