Scope and Content Kiln chambers and car detail, Douglas Fireclay Works, Dalry, North Ayrshire Douglas Firebrick Works opened in 1914. It was taken over by Morgans in the 1960s and bought by A P Green Refractories Ltd, an American company, in 1970. Douglas Works specialised in refractory bricks, noted for their heat resistance, using fireclay from local Ayrshire mines. The works was shut down in 1982. This shows the kiln chamber and car which transported the bricks through the kiln for firing. Douglas Works had four kilns. To the east of the works were two tunnel kilns about 100m long. To the north of the works were two more modern, intermittent kilns, a Gibbons and a Briseco. Douglas Works had six pan mills which crushed the fireclay ready for moulding into bricks. There were several presses for this task: six Clayton Goodfellows; one Bradley & Craven; one Welko Zeus II, made in Italy; five Fewcett screw presses; and two hand presses. After pressing and drying the bricks were fired in a kiln. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
