Scope and Content Dunure Mill, South Ayrshire This shows the mill from the south-east. The low wing on the right housed the kiln for drying oats before grinding. Note the unique arched windows, crowstepped gables and cross finials. The waterwheel was at the rear of the building. Because it was supplied with water from a dam, the mill was more visible than most. Its picturesque treatment was influenced by Robert Adam's buildings at Culzean, as the mill was, by that time, on the Culzean estate. This was the estate mill for Dunure, and was probably built in about 1780. It was obviously designed as a picturesque landscape feature as well as a practical building. It drew its water from a dam fed by a burn. It probably had three pairs of stones, and made oatmeal, flour and provender. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
