Scope and Content Dunure Harbour, South Ayrshire This shows the basin from the south-east corner, with the breakwater beyond the entrance, showing how it protects the entrance from northerly and north-westerly gales. The wooden frames were used for drying fishing nets. Though the harbour was used by fishermen in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it is likely that its primary purpose was trading. There is a pair of large lime kilns above the harbour, which probably used imported limestone and coal. This harbour was built in 1811, and consists of a small rectangular basin formed by two piers and the quayed sides of a small bay. The piers have rounded ends, and the western one has the remains of a small lighthouse at the seaward end. A breakwater protects the harbour from northerly winds.
