Description View from E showing crane and coal drop on S side of dock

Date 11/8/1970

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 739765

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Basin, Ayr Harbour, Ayr, South Ayrshire This shows the cargo-handling equipment on the east quay of the basin. On the left is a coal hoist, fitted with a conveyor for loading coal into the hold of a ship. To the right is a general-cargo crane, with others on the west quay just visible in the background. In 1970 the harbour in Ayr was equipped with four coaling cranes and a coal hoist, all designed to handle coal in the small wagons still in use at that date. In the foreground of this view are some of the railway tracks used to move wagons to and from the coaling devices. This basin was originally built as a wet dock on the north side of the harbour, constructed in 1874-8, and intended primarily for coal and iron shipment. It has remained in use for coal shipment, with a succession of up-dated mechanical handling devices, but the dock gates have long been abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
