Scope and Content Basin, Ayr Harbour, Ayr, South Ayrshire This shows the coaling crane serving the north end of the west quay, with its cradle for lifting coal wagons and tipping their contents into the holds of ships. It was made by Cowans Sheldon of Carlisle in 1937. In the left background is a motor coaster being unloaded by general-cargo cranes. Apart from the crane in the foreground most of the rest of the harbour was fitted with coaling cranes and a coal hoist for handling the small wagons of coal which were standard until the 1970s. As seen here one section of the west quay of the basin was fitted with cranes for general cargo. This basin was originally built as a wet dock on the north side of the harbour, constructed in 1874-8, and intended primarily for coal and iron shipment. It has remained in use for coal shipment, with a succession of up-dated mechanical handling devices, but the dock gates have long been abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
