Date 11/8/1970

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 739738

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Basin, Ayr Harbour, Ayr, South Ayrshire This shows the east quay of the basin, with a deep-water trawler in the foreground. This is the NETTA CROAN, LH100, owned by Joe Croan, Leith. Built at Aberdeen 1957. Behind the trawler are a general-cargo crane and a coal hoist, with a collier being loaded with coal for Belfast. The entrance to the basin is on the right. The crane and coal hoist seen here were installed in the 1930s. There were also coaling cranes on the north and west quays. The hoist and coaling cranes were designed for handling traditional small coal wagons. In the 1970s these were replaced by conveyor systems installed to handle coal from hopper wagons. This basin was originally built as a wet dock on the north side of the harbour, constructed in 1874-8, and intended primarily for coal and iron shipment. It has remained in use for coal shipment, with a succession of up-dated mechanical handling devices, but the dock gates have long been abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
