Scope and Content Cottages, Nos 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 Main Road, Minishant, South Ayrshire This shows a range of single-storeyed cottages on the east side of the main road through Minishant village, almost opposite the waulk mill at the north end of the village. Their character and setting suggest that these were built as houses for hand-loom weavers making cloth to be finished in the waulk mill. These houses were still inhabited in 1970, but subsequently fell into decay. Their current state is not known. The road is the main A77 trunk road from Ayr to Stranraer and Girvan. Ayrshire had an extensive rural woollen industry until the late 19th century, mainly supplying local needs. The industry was initially entirely domestic, the first part of the process to be mechanised being waulking: the felting of the surface of woollen cloth to make it more windproof.
