Scope and Content South quays, Ayr Harbour, Ayr, South Ayrshire This shows part of the western section of the south quays in use as a fish quay. The vessels are typical of the Clyde fishing fleet of the period. In the background are the north quays with towers, and, on the left, an electric coaling crane. Most of the south quays were disused by 1970. This western section was, as can be seen, used by fishing boats, but in the 1990s the fishing fleet was transferred to Troon, and the south side of Ayr harbour is no longer used for maritime purposes. These quays were probably formed in the early 19th century, when the trade of Ayr was almost entirely sea-borne. They may have been remodelled in about 1899, when a branch railway was built to link these quays to the railway on the north bank of the river. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
