Scope and Content Warehouses, Nos 41-65 South Harbour Street, Ayr, South Ayrshire This shows three of the four warehouses from the north-west. The hoists and lucarnes are characteristic of grain stores designed to handle grain in sacks. In 1970 they were still used for grain and seed storage. These warehouses fell out of use in the 1970s, and were badly damaged by fire in the late 1970s. They have since been demolished. This was the finest set of 'traditional' quayside warehouses in the west of Scotland. These warehouses were probably built in the early 19th century, perhaps in the period of high grain prices during the Napoleonic Wars. They were almost certainly built as granaries. They were latterly used as grain and seed stores. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
