Scope and Content Ayr Station, Station Road, Ayr, South Ayrshire This shows the circulating area on the west side of the station. The footbridge and glazed roof date from the 1880s rebuilding, but the interior is seen as refitted in the 1860s, when the original glazing of the roof was replaced by the corrugated plastic seen here. The platform seen in this view served trains from Stranraer and Girvan to Glasgow. These at the time provided much of the Ayr-Glasgow service. Since 1970 the Glasgow-Ayr line has been electrified, and this platform is now lightly used. Ayr's present railway station was founded on this site in 1857, when the Ayr & Maybole Railway was constructed. It replaced the first Ayr station, on the north side of Ayr Harbour, which had opened in 1840. The 1857 station was completely rebuilt in the 1880s, with an integral hotel.
