Scope and Content Old exhauster house, Tradeston Gas Works, No 95 Kilbirnie Street, Glasgow This shows the stairways leading to the exhauster house. The dignified cast-iron railings are indicative of the pride that Glasgow Corporation had in providing public services. The pipe is a gas main from the post-war vertical retort house. Exhausters were used in coal-gas manufacture to draw the newly-made gas out of the retorts in which the coal was being distilled. This house contained the two original low-speed exhauster sets, probably of the 1880s, and a post-war high-speed set, all steam-driven. Tradeston Gas Works was founded in 1843 by the Glasgow City & Suburban Gas Co. It was later taken over by Glasgow Corporation Gas Department and rebuilt. After World War II a new vertical retort installation was built, but this exhauster house was retained. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
