Scope and Content Mural Monument to John Lindsay and the Reverend Alexander Leslie, Crail Parish Churchyard, Crail, Fife The old tree-lined churchyard of Crail Parish Church contains an important collection of mural monuments dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. The Scottish photographer, Erskine Beveridge, made a detailed photographic record of the mural tombs and their epitaphs on a visit to the churchyard c.1890. This handsome memorial to John Lindsay (1680-1714), merchant, and the Reverend Alexander Leslie (1637-1703), Episcopal minister, lies on the south wall of the churchyard. The double monument, in three stages, has an upper stage consisting of a rounded pediment bearing the coats-of-arms of the Lindsay (left) and Leslie (right) families, flanked by the letters 'J L' and 'M A L' in large script. The central section has two large white marble panels with Latin inscriptions to Lindsay (left) and Leslie (right). The crossed bones and hour-glass carved on the lower stage are both symbols of mortality. In the 17th and 18th centuries, mural monuments were often elaborate, of great size and elegance, and frequently exhibited the fashionable architectural features of the day. They were built into the walls surrounding a churchyard, and were usually erected to one person, although, occasionally to more than one if related by marriage as in the case here of John Lindsay and his father-in law.
