Scope and Content Kirkmay House, No 7 Marketgate, Crail, Fife, from the south-west (formerly Kirkmay House Hotel and now private flatted residential accommodation) Kirkmay House, a large Classical villa that stands within an extensive walled garden on the north side of Marketgate, was built in 1817 for Robert Inglis of Kirkmay. The Scottish photographer, Erskine Beveridge, photographed the house on a visit to Crail c.1885. This two-storeyed and basement house has a double-bowed ashlar front with a rusticated ground floor, a doorpiece with Roman Doric columns, and an elegant flyover stair. The three-window bows have the outer windows left 'blind', possibly blocked up when the house was built. At each corner of the roofline are large urn finials, and the little cement-faced attic room, possibly a later addition, has a piended slate roof. Inserted into the west wall of the garden is a marriage lintel with ornamental carving, bearing the initials 'IM' and 'KP' and the date '1619'. This traditional Scottish door or window lintel, carved with the initials of the owner of the house and his wife and the date of the building (which was only coincidentally that of the marriage) is possibly that of John Mackieson whose house originally stood on the site. In Crail, marriage lintels were frequently reintroduced into new masonry after the original house to which they refer had been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
