Scope and Content Crail, Fife, looking south-west over the town from the top of the church tower Crail, a picturesque fishing port with a small tidal harbour, sits on the eastern tip of the Fife peninsula overlooking the North Sea. The Scottish photographer, Erskine Beveridge, photographed Crail c.1890, providing some of the oldest known photographic records of the town. This view, looking south-west over the town, was taken from the early 13th-century tower of the parish church. To the right, rising above the roofs, is the distinctive 18th-century pagoda-like spire of the tolbooth (town hall), and in the distance, two sailing vessels, possibly fishing boats, can be seen in the North Sea. In the foreground, surrounded by a large walled garden, is Kirkmay House, an early 19th-century townhouse built for Robert Inglis of Kirkmay. Erskine Beveridge (1851-1920) was the son of the founder of St Leonard's Linen Works, Dunfermline, and was educated at Dunfermline, privately in England and at Edinburgh University. Having a private income allowed Beveridge to indulge one of his main passions, photography. He visited Crail c.1890, and photographed the town comprehensively, providing a collection of landscapes and views of excellent quality and composition. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
