Scope and Content Former stable, Warsetter Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands At an altitude of some 60m above sea level, Warsetter is on the highest point of Sanday, one of the largest of the Orkney Islands. Sanday is low-lying and almost treeless and its fertile, sandy soils and temperate climate are favourable for the island's agricultural economy. This shows the stable wall and only remaining trevis or stall partition. The stable formed one corner of the main steading complex and would appear to have been renovated during the 20th century with cement rendering on the inner walls and a cement floor inscribed with a square pattern. Horses provided the power to pull all types of farm machinery and haul cartloads of manure to the fields. The introduction of the tractor to Orkney in the mid-20th century greatly reduced the number of horses needed and eventually led to their replacement by machines.
