Scope and Content Detail of calf stall on south wall of byre next to grieve's house and workshop, Warsetter Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands Warsetter is on Sanday, one of the largest of the Orkney Islands. Sanday is low-lying and almost treeless with fertile soils and a temperate climate. Unused since the late 1980s, Warsetter's steading is a well-preserved example of a large 19th-century Orcadian steading. This shows a characteristic calf stall separated by traditional flagstone trevises (partitions). This byre formed part of the main steading complex between the turnip shed and the blacksmith's shop. The hay-heck above the stall is made of wood but the floor and feeding trough are of flagstone with concrete drains. From the mid-19th century, Orkney's agricultural industry began to develop significantly. Cattle production expanded with the introduction of a regular steamship link with the mainland. Cattle were kept in byres for the long winter months, traditionally tethered by a rope looped round their horns. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
