Scope and Content Interior of byre with granary above, Warsetter Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from west Warsetter is on Sanday, one of the largest of the Orkney Islands. Sanday is low-lying and almost treeless with fertile, sandy soils and a temperate climate. Warsetter is located at an altitude of 60m above sea level, which is the highest point on the island. This shows the interior of one of Warsetter's three byres. Its eight double stalls on the south wall are separated by typical flagstone trevises (partitions). Flagstones were also used as flooring and to line the base of the feeding trough. About 200 sheep were kept at Warsetter and, during the winter, about 43 cattle. In 1836, the introduction of a steamship service enabled the transportation of cattle from Orkney to the mainland. It coincided with an upturn in the British farming industry and led to a period of sustained agricultural development on Orkney that men like John McKay, tenant of Warsetter were able to exploit.
