Scope and Content Top floor of threshing barn, Warsetter Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from east Warsetter was a mixed arable farm which kept cattle and sheep. Located at an altitude of some 60m above sea level, Warsetter is on the highest point of Sanday, one of the largest of the Orkney Islands. Sanday has fertile soils and a temperate climate favourable to the island's agricultural economy. This shows the top part of the threshing machine, divided between the upper and lower floors of the barn. Sheaves were fed into the threshing machine which separated straw from grain, feeding the straw along the straw walkers on the right to the straw barn. It also separated good grain from thin grain and chaff. Warsetter's threshing machine is an interesting example of one probably installed in the early to mid-19th century. It has been well-maintained and upgraded on several occasions. Its engine, last replaced in 1952, was made by R A Lister of Dursley, England. The steading fell out of use in the late 1980s.
