Scope and Content Pigeon entrance and datestone, Warsetter Dovecot, Sanday, Orkney Islands Warsetter is on Sanday, one of the largest of the Orkney Islands. Sanday is low-lying and almost treeless with good, sandy soils and a temperate climate. Warsetter, situated on the highest point of Sanday, is a fine example of a 19th-century Orcadian steading. This shows the north face of the stone dovecot at Warsetter with six pigeon holes. Above them is a stone with the date 1613 carved into it. It has been suggested that this stone has come from another building, possibly Sinclair House, which is not far away. This dovecot is a variation of the square or rectangular 'lectern-style' popular in the 16th and 17th centuries. The sloping roof of such dovecots traditionally faced south as this one does. Lectern dovecots replaced the previously popular circular 'beehive' design. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
