Scope and Content Warsetter Farmhouse, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from south-west Warsetter Farm is on Sanday, one of the largest islands of the Orkney group. Sanday, with its fertile soils and temperate climate, is low-lying and almost treeless. At an altitude of some 60m above sea level, Warsetter is situated at the highest point of the island. This shows the south-facing farmhouse with a porch at the front door. The house forms a T-shape and the single-storeyed leg on the north side (left) contains a flagstone-floored kitchen and servants' room. The rubble-built walls have been cement rendered and the main house is roofed with machine-cut slates. In the late 19th century, John McKay, who followed his father and grandfather as tenant of Warsetter, built a new, large farmhouse and good farm buildings. The house had a dry closet at the back, formerly used as a toilet and entered from the garden. A new bathroom, with toilet, was built in the 20th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
