Scope and Content Byre and workshop at east side of courtyard, Warsetter Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from south-west Warsetter is a well-preserved example of a characteristic 19th-century Orcadian steading. Although unused since the late 1980s, it has altered little and been well-maintained. Warsetter is on the highest point of Sanday, one of the largest of the Orkney Islands. This shows one of several byres in the main rectangular steading complex. The byre (right) is small and its single door has one window on either side. To the left is the former blacksmith's, general workshop and tool store. It contained a hearth, bellows, work benches and store cupboards. Warsetter was part of Lord Balfour's estate in the 19th century when the farm was tenanted by three generations of the McKay family. The last of these, John McKay, enclosed the farm and built a new steading and house. The farm then passed to the present owners, the Horne family, at the end of the century.
