Scope and Content Granary and byre, Warsetter Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from south Warsetter is a well-preserved example of a characteristic, 19th-century Orcadian steading which, until abandoned in the late 1980s, was particularly well-maintained. At an altitude of some 60m above sea level, Warsetter is on the highest point of Sanday, one of the largest of the Orkney Islands. This shows the two-storeyed granary and byre added to the original main steading complex. The byre contains cattle stalls, separated by flagstone trevises (partitions), with a flagstone floor and cement drain. The granary is reached by stone steps at the east end of the south wall. Warsetter was owned by the senior branch of the Sinclair family in Orkney during the 16th century. The 1613 datestone over the pigeon holes on the dovecot at Warsetter may have come from nearby Sinclair House. Over time, the family acquired neighbouring land to increase the size of the farm.
