Scope and Content Scar Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from south Scar Farm is on Sanday which forms part of the Orkney Islands. Sanday is some 38.6km from the town of Kirkwall on mainland Orkney. It is a low-lying, almost treeless island with fertile soils and a climate favourable to the island's agricultural economy. This shows the farmhouse which is of two and a half storeys. It is part of an extensive U-shaped complex of farm buildings and has a slated roof with dormer windows on the upper floor. It contains ten bedrooms, four public rooms, kitchen, laundry and store rooms. It was once the seat of the Traill family. George Traill was a retainer of Earl Patrick Stewart in Orkney at the end of the 16th century. The Traill family flourished and became well-known Orcadian merchant lairds. They traded grain with Norway and mainland Scotland for goods and materials, such as timber. It was a high risk business with big profits. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
