Scope and Content Distillery shop from north-west, Glenfiddich Distillery, Dufftown, Moray Glenfiddich (meaning 'valley of the deer' in Gaelic) was established and built from scratch by William Grant and his family in 1886. They fitted second-hand stills bought from Cardhu distillery, and the first spirit was produced on Christmas day, 1887. In 1963 it was the first whisky to be marketed outside Scotland as a single malt, and remains the most popular single malt in the world. This shows the distillery shop, with its beamed ceiling and whitewashed walls with a relief sculpture of a stag (the emblem of the distillery) above the cash desk. The wooden floor has areas of carpeting with a Celtic design. The shop sells whisky, branded clothing, bar accessories and souvenirs for tourists and enthusiasts. This large and impressively-furnished shop reflects the importance of marketing in the modern whisky industry. Whisky trails and tasting tours bring in tourists who increasingly expect facilities such as audio-visual displays, guided walks around the site, restaurants, gift shops and complimentary 'drams'.
