Scope and Content Former maltings and kiln from north, Glenfiddich Distillery, Dufftown, Moray Glenfiddich (meaning 'valley of the deer' in Gaelic) was established and built from scratch, by William Grant and his family in 1886. They fitted second-hand stills bought from Cardhu distillery, and the first spirit was produced on Christmas day, 1887. In 1963 it was the first whisky to be marketed outside Scotland as a single malt, and remains the most popular single malt in the world. This shows the former malt kiln with its pagoda vent and weathervane with a stag motif, the emblem of the distillery. To the right are the old maltings where barley was germinated before being dried over peat fires in the kiln. These attractive rubble buildings now house the visitor centre. Most distilleries, except for the very modern examples, retain their attractive malt kilns and maltings even if they no longer use them. Visiting tourists expect to see the characteristic pagoda vents and associate them with authenticity and tradition in the finished product. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
