Scope and Content View of kiln firebox and invert from south, Glendronach Distillery, Aberdeenshire Glendronach Distillery was founded in 1826 by a consortium called the Glendronach Distillery Company. After a serious fire in 1837 the site was restored by Mr Walter Scott who had learned the trade at Teanininch Distillery. Glendronach was bought by Captain Charles Grant in 1920, sold to William Teachers & Sons in 1960, was mothballed in 1996 and re-opened in c.2002. This shows the firebox which is fed with both anthracite (hard, clean-burning coal) and peat, and the invert which channels heat and aromatic smoke up to the malting floor above. Here, on perforated tiles, lies the barley which has previously been soaked in water, and allowed to germinate before being dried. Most distilleries used peat as a fuel for their kilns, as it was often easily gathered from natural deposits close to the site. This creates smoke with a distinctive scent known as 'peat reek', giving the barley, and in turn the finished whisky, a distinctive taste and 'nose'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
