Scope and Content View of still house from south, Glendronach Distillery, Aberdeenshire Glendronach Distillery was founded in 1826 by a consortium called the Glendronach Distillery Company. After a serious fire in 1837 the site was restored by Mr Walter Scott who had learned the trade at Teanininch Distillery. Glendronach was bought by Captain Charles Grant in 1920, sold to William Teachers & Sons in 1960, was mothballed in 1996 and re-opened in c.2002. This shows the four copper pot stills in the still house set into a stone base. The outer stills are wash stills (where the first distillation takes place) with a capacity of 13,638 litres each, and the two central stills are spirit stills (where the second distillation takes place) each with a capacity of 6,819 litres. The distillery cat, Gracie, sits on a tall stool in the foreground. Within the still, the wash from the fermentation stages is heated (using coal fires at Glendronach) until the alcohol rises as steam over the 'lyne arm' at the top of each vessel and is passed through the tall copper condensers (left). The clear spirit is then pumped to the sprit vat and poured into casks to mature for at least three years. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
