Scope and Content Spirit and filling store model, Glenkinchie Distillery, Pencaitland, East Lothian Glenkinchie Distillery was established in 1837 by brothers John and George Rate, who went bankrupt in 1853 leading to the closure of the site and its reuse as a cowshed. In 1880 the Glen Kinchie Distillery Company rebuilt the premises, and production began once more. The floor maltings were last used in 1968, and now house a museum of malting. The distillery continues to produce whisky for Haig's blends. This shows a 1:6 scale model of a spirit store with spirit vat, weighing scale and casks. It is part of a model distillery exhibited at the Empire Exhibition of 1924-5 at Wembley, London. It was shown as part of the 'Palace of Industry' exhibit, which celebrated the industrial strengths of the empire. Once casks have been filled with unmatured whisky from the spirit vat, the ends are stencilled with the distillery's name, the date and the cask number. Most distilleries use second-hand oak casks (which hold 250 litres), hogsheads (500 litres) and barrels (180 litres).
