Scope and Content Model of worm tub, Glenkinchie Distillery, Pencaitland, East Lothian Glenkinchie Distillery was established in 1837 by brothers John and George Rate, who went bankrupt in 1853 leading to the closure of the site and its reuse as a cowshed. In 1880 the Glen Kinchie Distillery Company rebuilt the premises, and production began once more. The floor maltings were last used in 1968, and now house a museum of malting. The distillery continues to produce whisky for Haig's blends. This shows a 1:6 scale model of a worm tub which was exhibited as part of a model distillery in the 'Palace of Industry' at the Empire Exhibition of 1924-5 in London. Alcohol rises as vapour up the neck of the copper stills (right) and passes into a coiled metal tube in a barrel of cold water where it condenses into spirit. The early home-made stills used by illicit distillers hidden in the mountains used small copper 'worms' inside barrels as their condensers. The still and worm were together known as 'the ewe with the crooked horn'. If discovered by the excisemen, these parts would be the first things to be destroyed, as they were vital for the manufacturing process and very expensive. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
