Scope and Content Model of spirit safe and receivers, Glenkinchie Distillery, Pencaitland, East Lothian Glenkinchie Distillery was established in 1837 by brothers John and George Rate, who went bankrupt in 1853 leading to the closure of the site and its reuse as a cowshed. In 1880 the Glen Kinchie Distillery Company rebuilt the premises, and production began once more. The floor maltings were last used in 1968, and now house a museum of malting. The distillery continues to produce whisky for Haig's blends. This shows a 1:6 scale model of a spirit safe and receivers, built for the 'Palace of Industry' at the Empire Exhibition of 1924-5 at Wembley, London. Spirit flowing from the stills passes into the safe (which is protected by Customs & Excise Crown padlocks) where the stillman directs the 'heart' of the run into the spirit receiver (left), and the 'foreshots' and 'feints' (start and end of the run) into the wines and feints receiver (right) for further distillation. Once spirit is made it becomes liable for tax, and is very carefully monitored to prevent theft. Over the years many ingenious devices were invented by unscrupulous workers to steal whisky from the works. These include copper 'dogs', metal tubes filled with whisky through the bung-hole of a cask and then smuggled out under clothing. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
