Scope and Content Hay barn, Kilmote Farm, Highland Kilmote Farm and steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate, which, by 1873 comprised almost 1.3m acres, more than 90% of the county. The house at Kilmote is dated 1767 while the steading dates from the 19th century when a great deal of money was being spent on 'improvements' to the estate. This shows the hay barn from the south. Possibly part of a post-1826 rebuild, involving remodelling of the south-east wing of the threshing barn, it was also used as a loose box with a loft above. The former upper floor joists were removed in the 1970s. The rafters and collars (160mm x 70mm) are both sawn and hand dressed. A 1908 report on the buildings at Kilmote said 'the tenants' buildings were all in good order, cart shed with corrugated iron roof, two-stalled stable for carriage horses, turnip and potato house, carriage shed'.
