Scope and Content Cattle shelters, Kilmote Farm, Highland Kilmote Farm and steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate, which, by 1873 comprised almost 1.3m acres, more than 90% of the county. The house at Kilmote is dated 1767 while the steading dates from the 19th century when a great deal of money was being spent on 'improvements' to the estate. These are the cattle shelters, originally with a granary above, comprising one side of the courtyard, and here viewed from the south-east. Later used for sheep handling, the building is stone with four arched bays opening into the yard and four ventilator windows into the loft to help air the granary. The cart shed is to the left and the hay barn to the right. Inside the cattle shelter are two partitions for cattle tyings, still in position along the back wall. From ground-level to the upper floor measures 2.3m. In front is the yard and midden with a cobble walkway on the north-west and south-west sides. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
