Scope and Content Kilmote Farmhouse, Highland Kilmote Farm and steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate, which, by 1873 comprised almost 1.3m acres, more than 90% of the county. The house at Kilmote is dated 1767 while the steading dates from the 19th century when a great deal of money was being spent on 'improvements' to the estate. This shows the front façade of the farmhouse viewed from the south. The slate-roofed building is mainly harled with ashlar margins and some harl-pointed rubble walling to the rear. The narrow central door has a dated and initialled lintel, reached by a flight of steps with a harled rubble balustrade. Above the attic windows and below the apex chimney-stack is a blind oculus. A rear wing was added later forming a cruciform-plan dwelling. The coped rubble garden wall has a cast-iron pedestrian gate with spear-headed decoration. The garden sits at the front of the house while the steading is situated behind, to the north. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
