Scope and Content Granary, Skelbo Farm steading, Highland Skelbo Farm steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate which, by 1873, comprised almost 1.3m acres, more than 90% of the county. By 1829, 36 lowland mixed farms had been created mostly along the coastal strip between Bonar Bridge and Helmsdale. Skelbo was one of these estate 'improvements' and in 1853 it was completely rebuilt. This shows the interior of the granary from the west. The granary is situated in the upper level of the north wing of the steading. This spacious room was used to store oats and barley both for animal feed and to sell. In the original plan the granary was above a dairy, implement store, wright's shop, infirmary, stable, food store, potato store and meal store. Apart from barley and oats, other crops grown at Skelbo included beans, pease, bere, cabbages, tares and rape. Turnips provided a 'break-and-cleaning' crop. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
