Scope and Content Grain dryer, Stable, Skelbo Farm steading, Highland Skelbo Farm steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate which, by 1873, comprised almost 1.3m acres, more than 90% of the county. By 1829, 36 lowland mixed farms had been created mostly along the coastal strip between Bonar Bridge and Helmsdale. Skelbo was one of these estate 'improvements' and in 1853 it was completely rebuilt. This shows the grain dryer located in the north part of the stable. All the original stalls have been removed from the stable. The oil-fired mechanism for the grain dryer includes a dryer, hopper and burner and bears the mark 'Ransomes'. Like the byre, the stable was built with an upper floor, but open above the stalls. The stall vents in the wall are slit vents with fixed louvres and shutters. A louvre, which comes from the Old French for 'skylight', is an opening fitted with sloping slats which admit light and air, but not rain. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
