Scope and Content Interior of cattle court, Skelbo Farm steading, Highland Skelbo Farm steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate which, by 1873, comprised almost 1.3m acres, more than 90% of the county. By 1829, 36 lowland mixed farms had been created mostly along the coastal strip between Bonar Bridge and Helmsdale. Skelbo was one of these estate 'improvements' and in 1853 it was completely rebuilt. This is the interior of the cattle court showing the wooden beams of the building and the fireclay feeding troughs which run around the outside edge of the court. The farm would have supported between 50 and 100 cows. Like all the coastal farms, the cattle were primarily for beef with a few milking cows kept for family use. Whilst the traditional breed of black cattle remained important on the estate, a 'Dunrobin breed, originally from Argylshire' was developed which sold for a lot more than the local cattle. Black-polled, or hornless, Galloway were kept at Kirkton Farm and won prizes for their breeder at all the local shows. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
