Scope and Content South block of Skelbo Farm Steading, Highland Skelbo Farm steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate which by 1873 comprised almost 1.3m acres, more than 90% of the county. By 1829, 36 lowland mixed farms had been created mostly along the coastal strip between Bonar Bridge and Helmsdale. Skelbo was one of these estate 'improvements' and in 1853 it was completely rebuilt. This is the south block of the steading viewed from the north-east. The plan for the 1850s rebuild shows this block as being designed to house a kitchen through the single door at the end (left) which then opened into a pantry to the left and women's room to the right. The arcaded area behind was the cart shed while at the far end of the block was a harness store. Improvement work continued on the estate through periods of prosperity and depression. Single tenant farms set in large regular arable fields were created alongside rotational farming which brought an end to the infield-outfield system. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
