Scope and Content Inner Hall, Auchterarder House, Perth & Kinross (latterly Auchterarder House Hotel and presently a private house) Auchterarder House, a Neo-Jacobean mansion house designed in 1834 by William Burn for Captain James Hunter, was extended and lavishly refurbished in 1886-7 by the architect, Sir John James Burnet, for the railway locomotive magnate, James Reid. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior c.1888. The inner hall, designed by Burnet in an opulent, heavy Baroque style, is lined with oak panelling and pilasters which divide the walls into different areas. The doors, with elaborately carved pediments, lead to the principal reception rooms - the library (left) and the drawing room (right). The floor is covered with Turkey rugs, and two gilded Classical figures on pedestals carry both candelabra and gas light fittings. Burnet created for his client a refurbished house that retained all Burn's original rooms but enriched with magnificent woodwork, the sculptural detail and design of which was executed by William Sheriff. He added new wainscot (panelling on the lower part of the wall) and scrolled broken pediment doorcases to the hall, and furnished the room with rich Turkey rugs, Turkish wool carpets with a thick pile and traditional bold design, usually in bright red.
