Scope and Content Auchterarder House, Perth & Kinross, from the south-west (latterly Auchterarder House Hotel and presently a private house) Auchterarder House, a Neo-Jacobean mansion house designed in 1834 by William Burn for Captain James Hunter, was extended and lavishly refurbished in 1886-7 by the architect, Sir John James Burnet, for the railway locomotive magnate, James Reid. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the house c.1888. The house, in rich red sandstone, stands in 20 acres of wooded grounds with views southwards to the Ochil Hills. This view of the house, with its crowstepped gables, splendid sculptured heads to the dormer windows, and strapwork balustrades over the ground-floor bay windows, best illustrates Burn's original work. William Burn (1789-1870) was one of the most successful and sought-after architects of his day. His strength undoubtedly lay in domestic architecture, particularly with large country houses, and he could count most of the Scottish aristocracy among his clients. In 1844 he left his Edinburgh practice and moved to London where his success continued. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
