Scope and Content First-Floor Lounge-Hall, Finlaystone House, Inverclyde (presently the home of the Chief of the Clan MacMillan and his family) Finlaystone House, originally built as a tower-house for the Dennistoun family in the late 14th century, was rebuilt and extended in 1746 by John Douglas as a handsome early Georgian mansion house for William, 12th Earl of Glencairn. In 1898-1903 the house was remodelled and refurbished in a grand style by the architect, Sir John James Burnet, for George Kidston, chairman of the Clyde Shipping Company. The interior was photographed by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, shortly after the refurbishment was completed in 1903. The lounge-hall, opening off the first-floor landing, has hessian-covered walls decorated with fleur-de-lys. Burnet has refurbished the room but retained its 18th-century features, including the ceiling height and elegant early Georgian fireplace. The furniture is also 18th century, but the fabric covering the sofa and cushions belongs to the Glasgow School. Burnet refurbished the house for George Kidston (1835-1909) who had made money as chairman of the Clyde Shipping Company, the first steamship company in the world which ran tugs on the River Clyde and coasters out of Glasgow. After renting the house for 25 years, Kidston bought it in 1897, and engaged Burnet to restyle it, spending a fortune, especially on the interior. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
