Scope and Content Office building from west, Ben Nevis Distillery, Fort William, Highland Ben Nevis Distillery was founded in 1825 by 'Long John' MacDonald, and first produced a whisky known as 'Dew of Ben Nevis'. The site was bought by Joseph Hobbs in 1955, who installed a Coffey still to produce grain spirit. In 1989, Ben Nevis Distillery was bought by the Japanese company Nikka who revived the production of malt whisky. This shows the flat-roofed distillery office close by the main entrance gates with their stone gate piers (right). Built in the 1950s in the Art Deco style, it features harled and painted walls, a row of flagpoles and an unusual flight of steps sheltered by a projecting porch on the sloping site. Most distilleries have attractive office facilities for discussing business with clients and managing the site. In more recent times they have been joined by the elaborate and impressive visitor centres, exhibitions, cafes and shops expected by tourists completing whisky trails and private tasting tours.
