Scope and Content Gardner Memorial Church, Dundee Road, Brechin, Angus (now Southesk Church) The Gardner Memorial Church, Brechin, designed by the architect, Sir John James Burnet, was built between 1896 and 1900 with the church and hall integrated into a single design forming an L-plan around a courtyard on its west side. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the church in 1900. This red sandstone, Gothic-style church has a squat, three-stage tower with Romanesque detailing, a corbelled parapet, and a slated pyramidal roof. At the north-east corner (right) of the tower is an apsidal stair-turret leading to the gallery at the east end of the church, and a long, low hall range stretching to the north, with a richly detailed and sculptured arched doorway under a stepped parapet, and square-headed three-light windows. The hall front has the most architectural detail with inventive stone carving of dragons, monks and even a devil-like figure in the corner next to the hall door. Like many of Burnet's similar designs, the church itself is quite plainly detailed in contrast to the hall, perhaps to suggest a higher purpose than the secular function of the hall.
