Scope and Content Nave, South Morningside Free Church, No 15 Braid Road and Cluny Drive, Edinburgh (now Cluny Church Centre) South Morningside Free Church, a late Gothic-style church at the corner of Braid Road and Cluny Drive, was designed in 1890 by the architect, Sir Robert Rowand Anderson, and opened for worship in 1892. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1895. The nave has a timber-lined tunnel roof with moulded arch ribs rising from carved stone corbels, and three-light clerestory windows arranged in pairs between the corbels. Pointed arches springing from squat piers lead to the side aisles, and a great seven-light east window floods the interior with light. The church has a seating capacity for 800, although, in 1889, the pioneer congregation numbered a mere 14. By 1890 the number had risen to 67, and five years later the church boasted a congregation of 400. The increase in numbers was partly due to the development of an efficient transport system from the city centre, and the opening of the Suburban Railway in 1884 which encouraged the growth of Morningside itself.
