Scope and Content South Morningside Free Church, No 15 Braid Road and Cluny Drive, Edinburgh (now Cluny Church Centre) South Morningside Free Church, a late Gothic-style church at the corner of Braid Road and Cluny Drive, was designed in 1890 by the architect, Sir Robert Rowand Anderson, and opened for worship in 1892. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the exterior in 1895. The church, in rich red Dumfries-shire sandstone, has a nave with lean-to side aisles, and a south-facing entrance porch. The square, four-stage, north-west tower, entered by a pointed-arch door, becomes more elaborate in successive stages. It has an octagonal corner stair-turret, and is topped by a crenellated parapet and a slim, octagonal lead spire. Sir Robert Rowand Anderson (1835-1921) had his architectural practice in Edinburgh, and was regarded as Scotland's leading architect at the end of the 19th century. In his early professional life his works were almost entirely ecclesiastical, with churches designed in the Gothic style. From the late 1870s his practice became more varied, and his celebrated public buildings include the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, McEwan Hall and University Medical School in Edinburgh. He was knighted in 1902. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
